Vinyl tile
Where tiles pop loose, a hand scraper lifts them in one piece. No sander, grinder or chisel touches them, because MPCA says those tools turn floor tile into regulated asbestos.

A floor that has been redone over the years can hide earlier ones. Under today’s surface there may be sheet goods, vinyl tile or a black glue, and asbestos can sit in any one of those layers. We have each layer tested on its own. Only the layers that come back positive are lifted, right down to the subfloor, and they are bagged as they loosen.
Floors lost their exemption on July 1, 2021. Since then, taking up tile or sheeting in a one-family house, or in a building with two to four units, falls under the same state rules as any other asbestos job. Kitchens, baths, front entries and lower-level family rooms in Minnetonka, Deephaven and Excelsior are all work we take on.

Black mastic gets its own lab result, separate from the tile above it.
Old sheet floors that look like linoleum have a paper layer on the back. In most cases MPCA counts that paper as friable, so it stays wet from the first cut to the bag, one strip at a time.
Covering is allowed. MDH says an intact, undamaged asbestos floor may stay under a new one. Damage changes that, since a cracking or crumbling floor can let fibers loose, and MDH’s strong advice is to have licensed workers remove it.
A few steps on your side keep the job tight.
Your part is an empty room, with no furniture, appliances or stored boxes left on the floor. Our part starts with plastic taped up the walls and over the doorways.
While the floor is up, you can’t use that kitchen or bathroom. Let us know which rooms you can do without and for how long, and we will plan the order of work around your household.
A bare subfloor tells you things a finished floor hides, like rot, past leaks or boards that have worked loose. We point them out so the flooring installer can include the repair in a price.
